Calories In Yogurt
~ Plain to Flavored ~

Calories in yogurt vary... from as little as 120 calories in plain, skim milk (nonfat) yogurt to 274 calories and higher in low fat, flavored yogurt (1% milk fat) in a 1 cup serving.

Number of calories depend on:

1.  Type of milk

2.  Fruit and flavored

3.  Type of sweetener

1.  Type of Milk

Depending on which part of the world you live, milk used to culture yogurt can be from cow, goat, ewe, water buffalo, mare, camel, yak or reindeer.

2.  Fruit and Flavored

As a rule, plain yoghurt contains less calories than flavored.  If you compare calories on different labels check that the type of milk is the same.  Skim milk, partly skimmed or whole milk have different calories. Each and every ingredient adds calories unless the ingredient contains zero calories.

The numbers will be slightly different in different brands.  All contain natural refined or unrefined sweeteners... i.e. not aspartame.

Calories in Flavored Yogurt

Randomly chosen.  Serving size 1 cup/8 oz/245 g

  • Vanilla Low Fat Milk (USDA Database):  208
  • Vanilla Low Fat Milk (Activia):  260
  • Chocolate Non Fat Milk (USDA Database):  274
  • Lemon All Natural Low Fat Milk (Dannon):  231

Fruit can be added before fermentation, or after, to plain curd.  The type listed below has fruit added before fermentation.

Calories in Fruit Yogurt

3.  Type of Sweetener Added

In North America and Europe, calories in flavored and fruited yogurt are kept low by using artificial sweeteners like sucralose and aspartame.  These are often marketed as "light".

Use of aspartame is controversial because of health concerns about it's safety.  I prefer natural sweeteners. 100% natural organic stevia has zero calories, a healthy way to enjoy sweet flavors without loads of calories.

Calories in "Light" Yogurt, Artificially Sweetened

Randomly chosen.  Serving size 1 cup/8 oz/245 g

  • Vanilla Light, Non Fat (Activia):  130
  • Strawberry Light, Fat Free (Yoplait):  130
  • Blueberry Light (Lucerne):  144
  • Peach Light & Fit, Non Fat (Dannon):  115

Types Of Sweeteners

Wow.  What a selection.... all sorts of milk, flavors and sweeteners.  Calories in yogurt really do vary.

If you make your own yogurt you have 100% control of the calories.  I switch between making plain curd and trying out deliciously flavored recipes.
